Toronto FC Secures Midfield Maestro Alonso Coello with Long-Term Contract Extension
Toronto FC has officially re-signed Spanish midfielder Alonso Coello to a new Major League Soccer (MLS) contract through 2027, with an additional club option for 2028. This commitment solidifies Coello’s role as a key player in TFC’s ambitions for the future.
“We are thrilled to extend Alonso’s contract ahead of the 2025 season,” said Toronto FC General Manager. “Since arriving from the NCAA to TFC II, Alonso has exemplified professionalism and steady growth. His development has been remarkable, and we’re excited to help him unlock his full potential in the seasons to come.”
The Madrid-born midfielder has made significant strides in his first two seasons with Toronto FC, registering one goal and three assists across 53 competitive appearances, spanning the MLS regular season, Canadian Championship, and Leagues Cup. In 2024, Coello hit new career milestones, tallying 20 starts, 25 total appearances, two assists, and 984 completed passes in 1,540 minutes of MLS regular-season action. Notably, he netted his first MLS goal on June 19, 2024, against Nashville SC and marked his 50th club appearance during the 2024 Canadian Championship Final against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Coello, who originally signed with TFC on April 8, 2023, after debuting against the San Jose Earthquakes on March 24, expressed his gratitude for the contract extension. “I am beyond happy to continue my journey with Toronto FC, the club that gave me my professional debut,” Coello shared. “This city and its fans have welcomed me with open arms, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally. Toronto is my home now, and I’m excited to give back to the club and the community that has shown me so much love.”
Before making waves in MLS, Coello showcased his leadership and skills with Toronto FC II, where he joined on April 1, 2022. As club captain in his debut season, Coello led the Young Reds to a Northeast Division title, their first-ever MLS NEXT Pro Cup playoffs, and the Eastern Conference Final. He logged a team-high 2,189 minutes across 25 matches in the regular season, proving instrumental to the squad’s success.
Coello’s path to professional soccer began during his collegiate career at Florida Atlantic University (2018–2021). Over 60 appearances, he recorded three goals and 11 assists and was recognized as a four-time All-Conference USA selection—a feat unmatched by any Owl since 2006.
