Lorenzo Callegari Commits to Halifax Wanderers Until 2026: A Pillar of Excellence in the CPL
The Halifax Wanderers have secured the future of one of the Canadian Premier League’s (CPL) most influential players, Lorenzo Callegari. The French midfielder, known for his precision on the ball and tactical dominance, has signed a new contract that will keep him with the club through the 2026 season.
Callegari, 26, joined Halifax in January 2023 from French side FC Chambly. A product of Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) esteemed academy, he spent seven years honing his craft in the youth and reserve teams of the Ligue 1 powerhouse from 2011 to 2018. Since his arrival in the CPL, Callegari has become a cornerstone of the Wanderers, making 53 appearances and becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in assists.
A Priority Signing for Halifax Wanderers
“He has established himself as a key piece of the squad with his consistency on the pitch, so this contract has been a top priority for us this off-season,” said Matt Fegan, Halifax Wanderers Sporting Director. “He remains very invested in the success of the club. These are the players we want to retain—loyal, dedicated, and fully committed to the club, our city, and our supporters.”
Callegari’s impact on the CPL is undeniable. A nominee for the league’s Player of the Year in 2023 and a finalist for the Players’ Player of the Year Award in both 2023 and 2024, he was also named Halifax Wanderers Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons. With 12 CPL Team of the Week selections under his belt, Callegari is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the league.
“Lorenzo is one of, if not the best player in the league, and a big part of our team, so we’re extremely excited to have him back,” said Wanderers Head Coach Patrice Gheisar. “He’s a top distributor and one of the best at winning tackles, with incredible work ethic and competitive spirit.”
A Promising Career Rooted in PSG and Beyond
Born in Meudon, France, Callegari represented his country at the U-17, U-19, and U-20 levels. He was part of the French squad that triumphed at the 2015 U-17 European Championship and competed in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. At the club level, Callegari made 43 appearances for PSG B and even featured in a 2016 pre-season friendly against Real Madrid.
After his time at PSG, he played for Genoa in Italy before returning to France to join Avranches and later Chambly, eventually making his way to Halifax, where he has flourished as one of the CPL’s brightest stars.
